Higher banking and retail stocks left the FTSE 100 Index on course to close at its best level in six years today.

The London market was given an immediate boost by strong trading in Asia overnight, before a range of sectors contributed to the Footsie’s progress to 27.8 points higher at 6345.7 by mid-morning.
