Ireland produced more waste per person in 2004 than any other country in the 14 countries of the 'old' EU.

Figures from the UK-based Institute for Public Policy Research show that the average Irish person created 869 kilograms of rubbish - almost twice as much as the average person in Finland.

There is some better news however, in that Ireland is lying mid-table in the amount of rubbish that it recycles.
