Tesco market share grows
The assault of Tesco on the market share of rival supermarkets shows no signs of abating, figures revealed today.
The supermarket giant saw its share of the UK market increase to 31.4% during the 12 weeks to September 10 compared to 30.1% during the same period last year.
The survey by TNS Worldpanel also found Asda retained hold of the tightly contested second spot with a market share of 16.7%.
Resurgent Sainsbury’s continued its strong run with a growth rate of 8%, giving it a market share of 15.9%.
Bradford-based Morrisons, which acquired rival Safeway in 2005, slipped slightly to 11% from 11.2% despite recent signs of a recovery.
Waitrose achieved a record share of 3.9% as recent acquisitions were consolidated into its portfolio.
Of the discount chains, the strongest performance can be seen at Aldi with a share of 2.5% thanks to store extensions and acquisitions.
Director of research Edward Garner at TNS, said: “The recovery of the two historically weaker retailers hasn’t prevented Tesco adding another 1.3 share points year-on-year – the brunt of the suffering is being borne by Kwik Save which has all but disappeared.”
