BP says the corrosion discovered at its huge Alaskan oil field is so severe it could shut down America’s single biggest source of domestic crude for months and drive world fuel prices even higher.

Oil prices climbed more than two dollars a barrel yesterday over the news that British Petroleum would have to replace 16 miles of pipeline at the Prudhoe Bay field. Petrol futures also rose.
