Irish mortgage holders will be relieved that the European Central Bank has left its key interest rate unchanged at 2.25% as expected, after its quarter-point increase last month pushed repayments higher.

However, most analysts think the ECB is preparing an increase as economic growth accelerates in the euro region, with the majority forecasting that rates will go up another quarter of a percentage point by March.
