Around 1,600 jobs were axed tonight when supermarket chain Morrisons confirmed the closure of two depots.

Morrisons said it was shutting the sites at Aylesford in Kent and Bristol because it was left with too many distribution centres following its £3bn (€4.3bn) billion takeover of former rival Safeway in March 2004.
