Govt criticised over electronic goods recycling directive

Shops selling electronic goods and equipment have criticised the Government over the implementation of a new EU recycling directive.

The directive, due to come into force in Ireland tomorrow, requires the producers of such goods to foot the bill for the collection, treatment, recovery and safe disposal of their products.

Shopkeepers are warning that these companies will pass the cost on to consumers, with a washing machine or fridge expected to go up in price by around €40.

Simon Healy of the 4Home chain of DIY stores said consumers were "being fleeced" as a result of the new law and the Government's failure to prevent companies from passing on the recycling costs.

"What started out as producer-funded recycling for waste electrical equipment has now shifted from the producer to the consumer in the form of a tax, which is then subject to further tax in the form of VAT," he said.
