Japanese e-security firm Trend Micro, which has an office in Cork that employs some 100 people, has reported a 22% gain in first-half profits as sales rose for its Virus Buster and other products.

Japanese e-security firm Trend Micro, which has an office in Cork that employs some 100 people, has reported a 22% gain in first-half profits as sales rose for its Virus Buster and other products.

Based at the IDA Business and Technology Park on Model Farm Road, Trend Micro opened operations in Cork in 2003 and consolidated many of the firm’s Europe Middle East and Asia back office functions.

Net income rose to 8.49 billion yen (€60m) in the six months ended June 30, from 6.97 billion yen a year earlier. Sales rose to 34.5 billion yen from 28.5 billion yen a year earlier.

Japan’s top anti-virus software group continued to enjoy steady growth. Both the US and the Asia Pacific regions experienced a 29% year on year increase in revenue, and sales in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) increased 19%.

Much of the company’s growth was buoyed by strong sales in internet security products.

For example, in the second quarter, revenue for network products including Trend Micro Network VirusWall grew 232% worldwide

The Tokyo-based firm has 23 business units worldwide and more than 1,800 employees.
