HSBC enjoys 5% profits rise

Banking giant HSBC today unveiled a forecast-beating 5% rise in half-year profits to $10.64bn (€8.7bn) as it reaped the rewards of its major global presence.

The group said its move into new and emerging markets contributed to the improvement.
