ISME seeks retention of ban on below-cost selling

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association is seeking the retention of the ban on below-cost selling.

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association is seeking the retention of the ban on below-cost selling.

The ban is contained in the 1986 Groceries Order and is designed to prevent large supermarkets from putting small retailers out of business.

The Government is currently considering rescinding the measure due to concerns that it harms competition and keeps some prices artificially high.

Organisations representing retailers appear to be divided on the issue, with IBEC and the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland calling for it to be abolished despite concerns from some of their members.

In a submission to Enterprise Minister Michael Martin, ISME has now come out in favour of the ban.

The organisation is arguing that removing the Groceries Order would harm small retailers and suppliers and lead to less choice, quality and service for consumers.
