The Chambers of Commerce of Ireland (CCI) has opposed the full privatisation of the ESB but has said “the break-up of the company is virtually a pre-condition of reforming it into a 21st century entity”.

CCI chief executive John Dunne said: “We strongly welcome the review announced by Minister Noel Dempsey today in the context of fostering competition in supplying electricity to business. A competitive electricity market is a vital requirement for sustaining viable businesses in Ireland.”
