Europe’s highest court ruled today that European Union governments were wrong to suspend the euro’s discipline rules last autumn to let France and Germany off the hook for excessive budget deficits.

The European Court of Justice ruled that the ministers “cannot depart from the rules laid down by the treaty or those which it set for itself”.
