Buses, trams and subways were brought to a standstill across Italy as local transport workers walked off the job to call for contract renewals.

On a hot summer’s day, transport was idle in several major cities including Rome, Milan and Naples, although service was provided during the morning and evening rush hours. In Venice, public ferry service was suspended.
