The European Union will today impose punitive sanctions on a range of US exports worth $3.93bn (€3.14bn) a year, risking the start of a global trade war.

In what is considered the worst row since the creation of the World Trade Organisation, the EC will impose a 5% additional customs duty on thousands of goods.
