The European Commission said it has ruled against France's special tax regime for takeovers of ailing companies, which it has declared incompatible with EU state aid rules.

In France, the general tax code provides for total exemption of profits for a period of two years in the companies newly set up to take over the assets of companies which have been, or are about to be, wound up.
