The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is encouraging consumers to submit their views on the voluntary addition of vitamins, minerals and certain other substances to foods.

The European Commission has drafted a regulation that is designed to protect consumers, limiting the number and quantities of these nutrients that can be added to foods, and also harmonise the different rules that currently exist throughout the EU.

The FSAI has opened a consultation facility on its website, www.fsai.ie , where details of the draft proposal have been placed.

Comments and opinions submitted before the end of January 2004 through the website, or by mail, will be considered for the FSAI's submission to the European Commission.

Dr Pat O'Mahony, Chief Specialist Biotechnology, FSAI, the proposed regulation would contribute to a higher level of protection for consumers by ensuring that foods to which certain nutrients have been added, are safe according to best scientific advice, and labelled in a clear manner so that consumers can make an informed choice.

The FSAI has stated that it actively encourages all parties to submit their views.
