October UK retail sales rise 0.6%

UK retail sales in October rose by 0.6% on a seasonally adjusted basis from a month earlier, the office of National Statistics said.

On a year-on-year basis, retail sales grew 3.7% in October, against economists' expectations of a 3.4% increase.

Retail sales rose a revised 0.7% in September, against the previous estimate of a 0.6% increase.

Sales at food stores rose 0.4% in October from the previous month, after falling 0.2% September.

October non-food stores saw sales rise 0.8%, after rising 1.5% in September.

There was rises in all sectors except textile, clothing and footwear stores. Textile and clothing retailers registered a sales decline of 0.5% in October, after seeing sales rise 3% in September, while household goods sales rose 0.8% following September's 0.9% increase.

Based on non-seasonally adjusted data, the average weekly value of retail sales in October was £4.62bn (€6.60bn), 3.1% higher than in October last year.
