SFI details further €9.5m funding

Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), has invested almost €9.5m in its latest round of research project approvals.

The funding has been awarded to 11 academic researchers working in the fields underpinning Biotechnology (BioT) and information and communications technology (ICT).

They will be based at universities in Dublin, Cork and Galway. All award recipients were selected after a process of international peer review of their individual proposals.

BioTech awards go to recipients who will be conducting research that may lead to new treatments for Alzheimer’s, retina diseases and AIDs-related infections.

Welcoming the announcement, SFI Director General, Dr. William C. Harris said: "Our mission is to build and strengthen scientific and engineering research and its infrastructure in the areas of greatest strategic value to Ireland’s long-term competitiveness and development.

"To achieve this, we invest in researchers who are most likely to generate new knowledge and leading-edge technologies that can best advance Ireland’s research, technological and economic competitiveness. These 11 researchers fulfill all of these criteria,” he added.
