IFA slams below-cost potato sales

The Irish Farmers Association has criticised Dunnes Stores for below-cost selling of potatoes this week.

The IFA said the supermarket chain's decision to sell Kerr's Pink, Rooster and Record varieties at half-price was "unscrupulous" and "highly irresponsible".

John Sheridan, chairman of the association's national potato committee, said potato growers are furious at Dunnes.

He accused the company of undermining the market and putting farmers' livelihoods in jeopardy.

"While Dunnes Stores customers may feel they are getting value for money, potato growers and their families will pay the ultimate price by leaving the sector," he said.
