The London market slumped nearly 200 points in the first minutes of trading today, hit by a shock announcement last night from US telecoms giant WorldCom.

In another nail-biting session for investors, the FTSE 100 Index of leading shares slid through the 4,500 barrier, down 172.6 points at 4458.4.
