Footsie rises above 5,000 level

London shares have soared to their highest level since the US terrorist attacks as investors pushed the FTSE 100 Index above the 5,000 level.

By the close, the Footsie had surged ahead 134.4 points to 5016.2 - its highest close since September 10.
