Analysts are baffled by the huge decline in consumer confidence in May despite the relatively strong performance of the economy.

The KBC/ERSI consumer sentiment index fell from a high of 87.2 in April to May 79.4 as people’s confidence waned.

KBC chief economist Austin Hughes said the scale of the drop in people’s confidence in the economy could just be a statistical anomaly.
