Overall, the US multinational reported $5.5bn (€3.98bn) in revenue from its worldwide operations over the first three months of the year, which is a 2% increase on the same period last year.

EMC’s Cork base is becoming a key part of the company’s global operations, according to Bob Savage, vice president and managing director of EMC’s centre of excellence in Cork.

‘The innovative business our Irish workforce has helped to build is at the centre of the major developments in global IT — cloud, big data and IT security. Here in Ireland, more than 3,000 highly skilled people are working across 28 business units, including engineering, advanced manufacturing, finance, research and development, customers service and sales serving the worldwide market,” he said.

“Through our extensive range of big data and cloud solutions, EMC is consolidating our presence as one of the country’s largest employers and an enabler for economic recovery through new technologies,” he added.

It exports to over 140 countries from Ireland with new customer wins over the past year including Tullow Oil, United Drug, HSE, Department of Education, Eircom, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and TSSG in Waterford IT.

Gerry Murray, EMC’s country manager in Ireland, said, “Our strategy and the EMC federation model that help businesses to reduce costs, operate more flexibly, leverage and protect their information and drive growth, is resonating with Irish customers. EMC continues to expand our customer portfolio here, driving fresh levels of innovation and positioning Ireland at the leading edge of global IT”.

First-quarter net income was $392 million. Consolidated revenues are expected to be $24.575bn for 2014.

For the first quarter, revenue from the EMC information infrastructure business declined 3%. Within this, EMC’s Information Storage business eclined 3% and, excluding EMC’s high-end storage business4, increased 6% year over year.

EMC’s emerging storage business revenue growth accelerated to 81% year over year, propelled by a number of products, including EMC XtremIO all-flash storage and EMC ViPR software-defined storage, it said in a statement.
