UPC signs deal with Vayu for renewable energy at 96 sites

Broadband and television company UPC has gone green, after signing a deal with Irish energy supplier Vayu to supply their 96 metered sites with renewable energy.

The deal will provide UPC with direct access to wholesale market prices for electricity, allowing the company to achieve significant savings compared with traditional fixed-rate tariffs in the market.

As part of a fully managed agreement, Vayu will provide UPC with the procurement tools and advice to purchase energy at the best price available in the market.

Facilities manager for UPC Ireland, Owen O’Mahony said the deal will help lower UPC’s carbon footprint: “Last year we consumed over 10 million kWh at our metered sites. Our partnership with Vayu enables our electricity consumption across our facilities to be generated from 100% renewable sources.

“This is one of a number of measures taken in 2013 to reduce our carbon output.”

Energy specialist with Vayu, Ross McConnell said the move was part of a growing trend among businesses in how they manage their energy needs.

“As our partnership with UPC shows, businesses are moving away from traditional approaches to meeting their electricity needs, as they look for greater value from their energy expenditure.

“This is shaping the electricity market, particularly for the large and medium- sized businesses where it is very much a case of one size does not fit all,” he said.
