Vodafone Ireland is to begin rolling out its new fourth generation (4G) commercial services in the autumn, the company announced yesterday.

Vodafone to begin roll out of 4G services this autumn

Kilkenny will be the first place to experience 4G services on the Vodafone network, as the company invests in rolling out its fourth generation technology from now, through the summer, and beyond.

Vodafone plans a comprehensive upgrade to its Irish nationwide mobile network. The company said it will bring a mobile data service to every place where there is a mobile voice service.

The first phase of this upgrade will be seen via a switch-on of enhanced 3G services, commencing in Waterford City and the south-east from later this month.

Last November, Vodafone emerged as the biggest spender in the State’s 4G multi-band spectrum auction, investing nearly €161m on upgrading its capabilities. In all, €855m was spent across the industry’s four main players.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Ireland also yesterday announced the establishment of its Enterprise Customer Solutions division, aimed at designing and delivering integrated telecommunications solutions for its business customers.

It builds on Vodafone’s recent acquisitions aimed at improving its services to corporate customers, notably the purchases, over the last two years, of Dublin-based IP network operator, Interfusion Networks and data network provider, Complete Telecom.

The company is anticipating 30% revenue growth from this part of its business, this year, on the back of the new division being established.

On an overall basis, Vodafone Ireland generated revenues of €1.13bn in the 12 months to the end of Mar 2012; its accounts for the most recent year not having been filed as yet.

Steve MacNicholas, head of the new division, said that Vodafone is now “a truly integrated telecommunications provider for Irish businesses” and the company wants to make it easier for companies to purchase and manage business telecommunications.
