The Iseq index followed European markets lower yesterday to close down 53.06 points at 3,233.14.

Disappointing US economic data contributed to the continued weakness in the markets. US durable goods orders rose by less than economists had anticipated in February, and US jobless claims fell last week, according to a government report, but still missed forecasts.

In the financial sector, Bank of Ireland dropped 0.4c to 12.4c. AIB slipped 0.4c to 9.1c. Irish Life & Permanent gained 0.1c to 4.3c, while insurance group FBD added 8c to €9.10.
