Construction dips by 6.4% in second quarter

THE volume of Irish-based building and construction work fell by 6.4% in the second quarter of the year, when measured against the three months to the end of March, according to newly-published figures from the CSO.

This fall was driven by a 3.6% monthly decline in the volume of output in civil engineering; a 7.2% fall in residential building work and a 3% decrease in non-residential building activity.

Ireland’s construction slowdown is more evident when the second quarter figures are viewed on a year-on-year basis, with total output down 23.4%.
