RESEARCHERS must view keeping consumers up to speed on food safety advances as a key part of their work, warned MEP Máiréad McGuinness.

Addressing the European Commission’s What’s For Lunch conference in Brussels, the Ireland East MEP urged all researchers not to neglect the pressing need to keep consumers informed rather than treat them as “food zombies” in matters relating to food safety and traceability.

Ms McGuinness highlighted the need for public funding of research to continue in order to provide consumers with confidence.
