THE man tasked with talking up the euro has insisted that more EU control over the euro would not mean “substantial” new tax-raising powers for Brussels.

European Council president Herman van Rompuy, on a visit to London for talks with British prime minister David Cameron, admitted he wanted to see even more single-currency controls from Brussels to prevent a repeat of the economic crisis.

“We must keep the link between the 17 of the eurozone and the 27 of the union,” he said. “The euro affects the single market... the euro affects the financial sector all over Europe.
