THERE has been a sharp increase in the number of people wanting to set up a new food business in Ireland since the recession started.

Since 2008, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s (FSAI) free industry advice service has dealt with an 72% increase in requests for help in starting a business.

The FSAI handled 734 enquiries in 2008, compared to 1,259 last year.
