Cork vegetarian food firm launches range of burgers on British market

VEGETARIAN food producer Deirdre Collins is launching her range of wholefood burgers on the British market.

Made entirely from materials sourced in West Cork, Dee’s Wholefood Burgers will be available in Britain from Marigold Health Foods stores. The burgers and other products in the Dee’s Eat Well, Be Happy range are free of salt, wheat, gluten, soy and dairy.

Deirdre Collins said: “We tried out some product in England before Christmas. We went to Brighton, which has the largest population of vegetarians in Britain. We sold out on the first day. Health stores over there are like supermarkets, a lot bigger than we’re used to here. They’re ahead of the game in terms of health food.

“We believe we’ll also soon be in a position to launch the range on the continental European market. Our organic Omega Burgers and organic Spicy Bean Burgers are suitable for vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs and anyone who realises the importance of following a healthy balanced diet.”

Deirdre Collins sources her vegetables, grains, seeds and other ingredients from Irish Independents near Macroom, Co Cork. Having initially sold her products in farmers’ markets in West Cork, the distribution is now handled by Horgan’s in Mitchelstown.

Her products for Britain are collected on a Tuesday from Irish Bacon Slicers in Ballincollig, consolidated at Dawn Farm Distribution in Naas, Co Kildare. They reach the wholesalers in London on Wednesday, and are on the shelves in stores on Thursday.

The range originally came to prominence on the RTÉ show, Dragon’s Den, where the range was given support by Blacktie founder Niall O’Farrell. The imminent London launch will be a big step forward for the brand.

Deirdre Collins said: “Over the last two years, it’s been full steam ahead. We’ve recently hired two staff and increased the number of stockists we supply across Ireland.

“We’re in the chilled grocery departments of the main supermarket multiples and convenience stores, including Dunnes Stores, Tesco, SuperValu, Centra and Superquinn.

“We’re thrilled to announce we’re taking the next step by beginning to export. It’s certainly an exciting time for the business.”
