IBEC has called for a widening of the tax net in the budget to cover all workers but warned the economy can only bear €600 million in tax rises.

In launching its pre-budget submission, IBEC director general Danny McCoy said while everyone will have to contribute to cure the economy, it is also “essential we don’t overtax our fledgling economic recovery”.

The group also agreed Budget 2011 needs to deliver savings of more than the previously anticipated €3 billion, but not excessively more.
