VAT rise praised as party clash erupts

THE Government has welcomed the British VAT increase, saying it will help curtail cross-border shopping and therefore stimulate the economy.

But Fine Gael has lambasted the Government’s approach to the issue, saying relying on actions by other countries does not represent a policy.

The row came after Enterprise Minister Batt O’Keeffe issued a statement welcoming the British move.
