Smith: Teagasc responding to education and training challenge

MEETING the education and training needs of part-time farmers was described as a significant challenge by Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith yesterday.

Smith: Teagasc responding to education and training challenge

He was speaking in Dublin at the presentation of the Teagasc Student of the Year Awards, sponsored by FBD Trust.

Noting that more farmers are choosing to combine farming with off-farm employment, he said he was pleased to see that Teagasc is responding to this education and training challenge.

The students honoured at the ceremony were chosen from over 800 who completed further level training programmes with Teagasc in 2009.

Mr Smith said the awards recognise the achievement of excellence by Teagasc students and emphasise the importance of education and training for those contemplating careers in the agri food business. Over the years, Teagasc has earned a reputation for delivering nationally accredited education and training programmes in the agricultural sector.

“I am pleased to learn Teagasc has completed a comprehensive review of its programmes and that they continue to be upgraded to the highest standards,” he said.

Chosen as the 2009 Teagasc Student of the Year was Alastair Doherty, Carnamuggagh Upper, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, who completed the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture course at Teagasc in Letterkenny.

Liam McDonald, Keale, Ballyorgan, Kilfinane, Co Limerick, the first runner-up award winner, is a student at Pallaskenry Agricultural College.

The second runner-up award went to Declan Dwyer, Killaraght, Co Sligo, who completed the Advanced Certificate in Agriculture at Teagasc Sligo.
