College toasts Heineken donation
Heineken acquired the Beamish facility in late 2008, and donated its archives to the city earlier this year.
Yesterday, the brewing giant marked the formal presentation of the equipment which has been installed in University College Cork’s brewery in its Faculty of Food and Nutritional Sciences.
The equipment, which includes a SCABA Beer analyser, as well as microbiological and analytical testing devices, has a replacement value of €€150,000.
It will be used by researchers, under the guidance of Professor Elke Aredt, UCC Professor of Food Technology, to enhance the malting and brewing process.
They are also researching the use of alternative grains to allow the brewing industry reduce its carbon-footprint, the development of gluten free beer, and alternative uses of waste products from the brewing industry.
Heineken Ireland’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Declan Farmer, said the latest donation will ensure the legacy of Beamish and Crawford continues.
