Consumers urged to buy Irish to show support of agri-food industry
Agri Aware chairman Máiréad Lavery said consumers who buy Irish are giving the gift of support to farming families and local agri-food industry.
She said 2009 has been a challenging year for all. However, consumers who act with festive spirit can support livelihoods by buying quality Irish produce this season.
“Ireland consumes €11 billion worth of food annually which is predominantly supplied by our indigenous agri-food industry,” she said.
Agri Aware pointed out that the food processing sector is the largest wealth generator in the Irish manufacturing sector.
Hundreds of thousands of people are working hard to ensure that consumers have safe, quality food for their favourite family get-togethers such as Christmas dinners.
Agri Aware has launched a campaign to encourage and thank consumers for their support in buying local produce.
“The livelihood of one-in-every seven people in communities nationwide relies on the agri-food Industry.
“There is no better time to support these farming families and food producers than on our annual Christmas shop,” it said.
