Sheep dogs set to thrill at trials
Television programmes brought their combined ancient talents and skills into the living rooms of millions of viewers over the years.
Urban dwellers were given an insight into the bonds that exist between sheepdogs and their masters.
But, this weekend, the clear commands of handlers and the quick responses of their dogs will be heard and seen in south Tipperary.
The event is the Irish national sheepdog trials which began yesterday on the farm of Jim English, Rehill, Ballylooby, and continues until tomorrow.
Delighted at his farm being chosen as the venue, Mr English said it was also a great honour for the area.
Brian Casey, Burncourt, who is supplying the sheep for the event, said a big crowd is expected to attend what is the premier event in the Irish sheepdog calendar for this year.
The top 150 sheepdogs and handlers from all over Ireland and the Isle of Man will compete for 15 singles places on the Irish team.
It will compete in the International Trials in Lowther, Cumbria, in September. Three pairs will also compete daily for a further two doubles places on the team.
A committee headed by Dan Morrissey, chairman, Tom Sullivan, secretary and Muiris O’Grady. treasurer, organised the trials.
The event will revive memories for some of Phil Drabble who presented the BBC TV programme One Man and His Dog.
