National Strawberry Week launched as sales grow by 6% since 2007

According to a new TNS Worldpanel report, the value of strawberry sales in Ireland reached €50 million in last year.

These figures were released yesterday at the launch of National Strawberry Week, which takes place from June 1-7.

National Strawberry Week is organised by the Irish Soft Fruit Growers Association in conjunction with Bord Bia and the IFA.

The campaign aims to encourage consumers to enjoy more strawberries and will include promotions at primary school and the launch of a recipe website.

Manager of horticulture with Bord Bia Mike Neary said: “Fresh fruit and vegetables are a vital part of a healthy diet.

“Strawberries are an increasingly popular choice among consumers as a tasty, low calorie, convenient snack.

“We hope this campaign will encourage the public to eat more strawberries within the optimum Irish production season.”

Gary McCarthy of the Irish Soft Fruit Growers Association said 2008 was a great year for strawberry sales and it is hoped that 2009 will be even better.

Strawberries are naturally high in fibre, vitamin C and potassium.
