TIGHTENING credit conditions and rising unemployment have hit the demand for mortgages hard in the first three months of the year.

New figures show demand down by over two-thirds at 68%, pushing the level of lending down to €2 billion over the quarter, from a comparable figure a year earlier of €6.27bn.

The volume of home loans dropped 61%, it said.
