THE race to the bottom by supermarkets is doing nothing to reduce their own exorbitant margins, but is destroying the livelihoods of Irish farmers and threatening Irish jobs, it was claimed yesterday.

Irish Farmers Association (IFA) president Padraig Walshe accused retailers of turning the screws further on farmers and growers in their fight to keep market share and protect their own inflated profits.

Mr Walshe said there was lavish colour advertising by the supermarkets in the national newspapers yesterday, with Aldi and Dunnes announcing they have joined the battle with Tesco.
