Market hit by banking plunge

In a volatile day of trading shares in the main financials tumbled as confidence in Irish banking shares collapsed. Also the chief executive of Bank of Ireland, Brian Goggin announced that he would retire in the summer.

AIB dived 85c to 60c, Bank of Ireland plunged 41c to 34c, while Irish Life & Permanent halved from €2.20 to €1.10. FBD Holdings dropped 50c to €8.10.
