Markets battered across Europe

ANOTHER gloomy day for world indices played out yesterday. ASIAN markets lost significant ground overnight on Thursday and this weakness was carried to European markets.

The Irish market plummeted by more than 5% at one stage in early trading only to recover some ground towards the finish to close down 60.51 at 2,650.21.

It was a mixed day for the financials with AIB and Irish Life and Permanent being big losers, slipping 36c and 94.6c to €3.16 and €2.15. Bank of Ireland finished level for the day at €1.60, while Anglo-Irish made minor headway adding 5c to €1.85.
