Book acknowledges key role of Teagasc in farm research

A BOOK launched at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin yesterday records 50 years of agricultural, research, advice and education provided by Teagasc and its predecessor An Foras Taluntais.

Growing Knowledge, a 220-page illustrated book, was compiled and written by Michael Miley and published by Teagasc as part of its golden jubilee celebrations.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Brendan Smith said he believed the book, which he launched, makes an important contribution not only to the history of the industry but the country.

“The current situation with the public finances requires that resources are deployed to best effect. The work described in Growing Knowledge must continue,” he said.

Mr Smith said the book contains a vast amount of information as well as anecdotes and personal accounts outlining how the agriculture and food industries have grown from modest beginnings to the world-class status they enjoy today.

Mr Smith said the book quite rightly draws attention to the huge contribution made by the late Dr Tom Walsh in the establishment and development of An Foras Taluntais.

“I think it is also absolutely appropriate that the connection and financial contribution from the United States is recognised and prominently acknowledged in the book.”

Mr Smith noted that the huge contribution that has been made and continues to be made by the Teagasc colleges and advisory services is fully acknowledged with dedicated chapters in the book.
