Call for renewed research emphasis

THERE must be a renewed emphasis on research and development in agriculture, according to European Parliament member Mairead McGuinness.

Speaking at the launch of the 67th Virginia Agricultural show in Lisgrey House, Cavan, she said years of neglect in this area has cost the country dearly.

“We need to develop new ways of doing things, consistent with increasing production, but which also ensures that farmers earn a decent income from producing food.
