THE story of farm incomes is a mixed one, despite Central Statistics Office estimates of an overall 7.3% increase in 2007, according to Professor Gerry Boyle director of Teagasc.

He said the improvement in dairy incomes is extremely welcome, the rise in cereal prices is a positive but beef, sheep, pig and poultry farmers are competing in a more difficult market situation.

Prof Boyle said the higher milk prices in 2007 have contributed to a more positive outlook and greater confidence among dairy farmers.
