British retail sales rise 2.4%

BRITISH retail sales in the run-up to Christmas rose 2.4% compared to a year ago, according to data from MasterCard.

The figures suggest Christmas spending has not been as bad as some analysts had feared given a deteriorating outlook for the economy.
