Organic product rules aid consumers

THE new European Union regulations on organic production and labelling have been clarified by agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel.

Ministers reached political agreement at their council meeting in Luxembourg last week on the new rules which are geared towards a simpler regime for both farmers and consumers.

The rules set out objectives and principles for organic production, and include permanent import and more consistent control regimes.
