First farmers’ markets conference
However, the organisers of the first All-Ireland Farmers’ Markets Conference, which will be held in Athlone on July 2, claim the expectation of consumers varies widely across the country.
They also say that information about how to establish and run a market effectively can also be difficult to access. In addition, the regulations concerning markets appear inconsistent and can be confusing.
In response, the Rural Food Company Training Network and the Western Organic Network, in association with Comhar LEADER na hÉireann (the Irish LEADER Network) and supported by Atlantic Organics, have organised the Athlone programme.
Conference director Lucie Kennedy said the event at the Radisson SAS Hotel will offer practical examples of what makes farmers’ markets successful and sustainable in different contexts.
“It will be invaluable to stallholders, farmers and growers, LEADER companies, rural development organisations, county councils and tourism authorities.
Ms Kennedy said one of the highlights will be a roundtable discussion on setting standards for farmers’ markets in Ireland hosted by Isobel Fletcher of the Irish LEADER Network.
