THE Irish Farmers Association has accused the Department of the Environment of failing to introduce the nitrates derogation legislation.

IFA president Padraig Walshe, speaking at a Cork Central County Executive meeting, said it is unacceptable that the derogation approved at an EU Nitrates Committee meeting in Brussels almost five months ago is still not signed into Irish law.

Mr Walshe said the energy and resources committed by the Government to farm inspections last winter contrasted with the indifference and inaction shown on this important issue for farmers.
