Naughten issues GM labels warning

ONE-THIRD of animal feed consignments imported into Ireland in 2005 were mislabelled as containing no genetically modified material when, in fact, the opposite was the case, said Fine Gael agriculture and food spokesman Denis Naughten.

He said that under strict Department of Agriculture and Food rules, all consignments of animal feed coming into Ireland which carry no GM declaration, or are declared as not containing any GM, are tested.

“Of the 17 consignments of such feed imported in 2005, five were found to contain GM material,” he said.
